I had last Friday off from work. As sometimes happens, i was in desperate need of a project. I had just finished Burnout Paradise, and for whatever reason, I wasn’t feeling Rock Band, so rooting my G1 and installing 1.5 seemed like the only logical way to kill a few hours. I’ve been looking forward to “Cupcake” since first hearing about the development branch of Google’s operating system. The update addresses some of the concerns I’ve had with my new phone, and I pretty much just love diving into new stuff and learning as much as possible.
So what if Tmobile is deploying the update over-the-air beginning this week…So what if I have no idea what the side effects of gaining root access to my G1 may be..So what if I don’t know anyone with a rooted G1 and have to trust a total stranger on Youtube..

Haykuro Build
I followed a two-part video tutorial posted on Youtube by AnthonyMoreno24. The videos had a great mix of computer and phone screenshots/casts and some great accompanying text in the info box. Despite one difficult to interpret telnet command, I had root access in a matter of minutes. I can’t say it wasn’t hairy at times, and I never truly knew if the next time I powered off my phone it would boot, but in my case, the downgrade/upgrade went off without a hitch.
I installed the Haykuro version of the 1.5 software, but have now swapped to JesusFreke. Both versions ran/run perfectly.
Now my G1 has all the great capabilities of cupcake, plus I have multi-touch, the ability to save apps on my SD card, and several other new features!
Although Butler’s bat has woken up a bit over the last two weeks, I still have to know:
How slow is Billy Butler? It’s simply amazing.
